Mission/Vision/Goals Statement

DIVISION OF STUDENT SUPPORT AND RETENTION

The Division of Student Support and Retention has established a new direction in objectives and target populations. The Division emphasizes a continuum of student support services from middle school through graduate school, described as a pipeline approach to student access.

 

Mission Statement:  To enhance student development and success through a continuum of programs and services from middle school through graduate school.

Vision Statement:

  1. To address the needs of a diverse student population to include students of color, students with disabilities, and students who are at-risk, under-represented, economically disadvantaged, or first-generation.
  2. To lead, through best practices, in programs and services that promote student learning, development, persistence, connection, and satisfaction.
  3. To collaborate within and beyond the campus community to enhance student achievement.
  4. To foster an inclusive campus environment that is culturally responsive and sensitive to a community that respects and celebrates diversity.

Division Objectives

  1. Establish pathways to college, with emphasis on the STEM disciplines.
  2. Maintain student support services that enhance student success.  Emphasize, in the first and second years, student academic success. Emphasize, in the third and fourth years, graduate school and employment preparation.
  3. Identify and support, in collaboration with the schools and colleges, research experiences for students of color.
  4. Structure a means to support systematically Division endeavors and to develop revenue-producing enterprises for Divisional support.
  5. Develop and maintain on-going engagement and outreach activities with alumni and other partnering constituencies.
  6. Communicate, through a systematic marketing strategy, the shift in emphasis of the Division.

Division Outcomes

The Division will contribute to the following outcomes.

A.  The Division’s pre-college programs and services will contribute to:

  • Increased awareness of and successful transition to undergraduate programs at Syracuse University ;
  • Increased college applications in STEM fields to Syracuse University from targeted populations;
  • Lower drop-out rates in the Syracuse City School District population, with particular   emphasis on the drop-out rates between 7th-grade and 12th-grade for the Fall 2005, Fall 2006, and Fall 2007 7th-grade cohorts;
  • Improved graduation rates in the Syracuse City School District 12th-grade population for the Fall 2005, Fall 2006, and Fall 2007 7th-grade cohorts.

B. The Division’s college programs and services will contribute to: 

  • Improved graduation rates of student populations served by the Division;
  • Improved graduation rates of STEM-field undergraduate students, with emphasis on students of color;
  • Increased access to the physical campus and to the educational experience.    

C.  The Division’s graduate and career preparation programs and services will contribute to:

  • Increased participation in research experiences for students of color, in collaboration with the schools and colleges;
  • Increased graduate-school applications among student populations served by the Division;
  • Increased employment and graduate-school applications among STEM field undergraduate students. 

 D.  Through its engagement, outreach, and marketing activities, the Division will contribute to:

  • Increased participation of alumni of Division programs in support of current program students;
  • Increased awareness of and use of Division programs and services.
