What is the purpose of asking these questions?
At SSUI, we pay attention to and value all of the many aspects of a Syracuse University student's life. In order for us to begin to get to know you and best understand how we can be helpful, we ask some questions about who you are and things that are important to you. You will find questions that cover academics, personal issues, and the coaching you will receive. Spend some time to answer the questions thoughtfully and feel free to elaborate or add anything that you feel will be helpful for us to know. If you feel uncomfortable answering any questions, please note that and we will follow up with you during the interview. Devote a paragraph or two to each topic (academics, personal, and coaching).
Academics
- If you had your ideal summer at SSUI, what educational goals would you have reached?
- How do these goals fit into your bigger educational picture?
- What are you personally prepared to do so that you achieve these educational goals this summer?
- What changes do you need to make in order to help your education move forward?
- Brainstorm a list of action steps that you can take to start making these changes.
Personal
- What special interests do you have (other activities/leadership roles you are involved with)?
- What are some of your personal strengths?
- What are some of your strong personal beliefs?
- How do you see your educational goals (you might want to look at the previous page) relating to your personal development?
- What personal goals (if any) would you like to achieve this summer?
- What changes do you need to make in order to help your personal development move forward?
- Brainstorm a list of action steps that you can take to start making these changes.
Coaching
The Student SUccess Initiative believes in students and their inherent ability to grow. We believe that students have the ability to identify and create goals, to improve their learning, performance, and personal development to enhance the quality of their lives.
Our philosophy about coaching mirrors our belief in students. We believe that coaching is an ongoing relationship between the coach and the student, which focuses on the student taking action towards the attainment of goals. The coach's role is to help unleash the inherent potential in each individual.
- What specifically do you want to work on in coaching?
- If you can, identify someone in your life that has motivated you. How did they connect and what style did they use (were they a drill sergeant, an assertive motivator, a quiet challenger, something other than that)?
- What do you tend to do when things get overwhelming and stressful?
- What can your coach say or do when you are stuck that will help you move forward?
